The holidays are all about giving, and what better way to give than to give to the next generation of young academics? If you’ve been to Vista Verde, or know anything about the way we operate, you know that we place a high value on our community—and that community begins with our incredible staff from all walks of life. We especially pride ourselves on creating an employment experience that allows for growth and a positive lifelong impact.

A fierce supporter of this mission was Charlie Cammer, who worked at the ranch from 1999-2022. During his time at Vista Verde, Charlie was committed to helping the many young staff he mentored learn and grow into leaders who serve their community, are environmentally aware, and are paying it forward out in the world. He firmly believed in investing and providing guidance to future generations so they would carry these lessons with them long after they left the ranch.

In 2019, in honor of his 20th anniversary at VVR, the Elk River Kipper Scholarship was created, and each spring one former employee is selected to receive up to $5,000 to use towards their education. In Charlie’s retirement, the scholarship continues as a tribute to his legacy of dedication, mentorship, and care for the young staff who call the ranch home. To learn more about the origins of the scholarship, read our blog post announcing the creation of the scholarship and read here about Sarah Patton, who won the award this past year to continue her education to become a Registered Dietitian.

“Vista Verde Ranch has been a pivotal part of my journey regarding personal growth and career growth,” Patton said. “During my time at Vista I was able to strengthen skills such as communication, time management, and social connections. As a server, communication in the kitchen was vital, making sure the server team was on the same page as the chefs. I value the lesson of hard work, kindness and community which Vista Verde has shown me in copious amounts!”
